What You’ll Learn / Gain

  • AWS Cloud Databases (Application Deadline: May 20th)

    • How to spin up a new relational database in the cloud, as well as a local interface

    • Security best practices and protocols

    • How to create users and administer a shared database

    • While we do not support Amazon’s anti-union labor practices, we will be using their free tools that students can then utilize with some slight modifications on paid platforms. We have selected AWS because it's available to students free of charge, which meets one of our core values of accessibility.

    • The course will be taught and coached by Andy Love, Jachwa Dolne, Michael Wood, Safiya Braylor, and Taré Suriel.

Time Commitment / Schedule

  • AWS Cloud databases will meet May 25th, May 27th, and June 1st from 7-9pm EST. We will also offer office hours. Participants should expect to put in 8-12 hours total between formal training and independent work time. We’ll accept 20 students for this program on a rolling basis, so please apply early to increase your chances of being accepted.

Who Should Apply?

  • We’re particularly interested in

    • Individuals with advocacy and campaign field experience who like working with data / technology

    • Individuals with with strong existing skill sets in areas including data analytics, computer programming, software development, statistics, and more

    • For AWS Cloud databases preference will be given to applicants with strong existing SQL skills. There is a SQL assessment as part of the application for this particular Mini-Camp

  • Black, Indigenous, other People of Color, women, queer, trans, those with disabilities and other individuals from underrepresented and marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply

    • Our students are 60% Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, 60% female or non-binary, and 35% LGBTQIA+

What Do I Need?

  • A Mac, Windows, or Linux laptop with at least 4GB of RAM. Chromebooks won’t work. All course materials will be provided

  • Access to a reliable internet connection with download speeds around 20Mbps
